East Finchley Allotment Site
Our allotments are located in a quiet spot, surrounded on different sides by woods, residential gardens and more allotments. The ground rises and falls across the site, sloping slightly to the north and cut by two streams which take local surface water.
The soil is mainly a heavy loam with patches of clay and sandier material over a clay sub-soil. This was all dumped here by the glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. After nearly 100 years of cultivation, most of the ground is relatively easy to work and in reasonable heart. The heavier areas need more effort but, with plenty of manure and compost, they can produce excellent crops.
